Bufo In Peru

Fifteen minutes that most people cannot describe afterwards. Two people have to agree before you are offered it, we use synthetic 5-MeO-DMT so no toad is milked, and most first time guests are asked to wait.

In plain terms

The shortest and most complete disappearance on offer anywhere

Bufo is the common name for 5-MeO-DMT, a compound found in the secretion of the Incilius alvarius toad and also produced synthetically. Vaporised and inhaled in a single breath, it takes hold in about fifteen seconds, peaks for roughly five minutes, and is essentially finished within twenty.

It is not a shorter ayahuasca. Where ayahuasca gives you five hours of material to work through, Bufo usually gives you nothing to hold at all. Most guests describe a complete loss of the sense of being a separate person, with no memory of the room, their name, or having taken anything. Often there is no visual content whatsoever.

That absence is exactly why it is hard to integrate and why we say no to it more often than we say yes.

One guest, two facilitators, one room, in the quiet of the morning after the final ceremony. Never in a group, and never at night.

Sourcing

No toad is milked for anything we serve

The Incilius alvarius toad lives in the Sonoran Desert, thousands of miles from Peru. Milking stresses the animal, the practice is often repeated on the same individuals, and demand from retreat centers is now a documented pressure on wild populations. Some of what circulates has also travelled a long way in unknown conditions.

We use synthetically sourced 5-MeO-DMT. It is molecularly identical to the compound in the secretion, it can be dosed precisely rather than estimated, and it takes nothing from an animal that has no part in this valley’s tradition.

Ask any center this question directly and note how precisely they answer. Vagueness here usually means toad.

Clearance

Two people have to agree, and either can say no

Every other medicine here is cleared by the physician alone. Bufo is the only one that needs a second signature, because the risks are not only medical. Neither person has to explain their decision to you, to the group, or to each other.

01

The physician, on medical grounds

5-MeO-DMT produces a sharp, brief rise in blood pressure and heart rate. That is the primary medical concern, and it is assessed against your file and against how your body handled the ceremonies that week.

  • Cardiac history and blood pressure
  • Any serotonergic medication, including anything tapered for the week
  • How you responded physically across four ceremonies
  • Your state on the actual morning, not on paper
02

Your integration lead, on everything else

They have spoken to you before you travelled and every day since. Their question is not whether you can survive it, but whether you will be able to do anything useful with it once you are home.

  • How the four ceremonies actually landed
  • Whether you are chasing intensity or following something
  • What support exists for you in the month afterwards
  • Whether waiting a year would serve you better
Being declined costs nothing

Bufo is not priced separately, so a no changes nothing about what you paid or what you receive. That is deliberate. A center that charges extra for its most intense medicine has a reason to find you eligible.

A session, minute by minute

Twenty minutes, and most of it is the return

Timings vary and this is a description of the shape, not a promise about your experience. It is written from what guests report, because almost nobody remembers the middle of it.

The night before

Nothing is decided yet

After the fourth ceremony closes, the physician and your integration lead speak separately and then to each other. If either has a reservation, you are told in the morning and nothing further is discussed. Roughly half of the guests who ask are asked to wait.

8:30 am

A conversation, not a briefing

Your integration lead asks what you are looking for. If the answer sounds like chasing the biggest thing available, the session usually does not happen. This is the last point at which it can be called off, and it often is.

9:00 am

The room, and the position

You lie down on a mat before anything is administered, because standing is not possible during the peak. One facilitator sits directly beside you with a hand on your shoulder. The second handles the dose and watches the clock. Blood pressure is taken.

0 to 15 sec

One inhale, and then it is already happening

You hold the vapour for as long as you can. There is no gradual onset and no window in which to change your mind. Guests often describe a rushing sound and a sense of enormous acceleration before anything else registers.

15 sec to 5 min

The peak, which you will not remember

Most guests have no recollection of the room, their name, or having taken anything. Some are silent and still, others move, make sound, or weep. All of that is normal, the facilitator stays in contact, and nothing you do here is embarrassing or unusual.

5 to 12 min

Coming back, in pieces

The room reassembles gradually. Language returns last. Many guests are disoriented, tearful, or laughing, and some are unsettled by how completely they were gone. The facilitator stays beside you and says very little.

12 to 25 min

Sitting up, slowly

Blood pressure is taken again. Water, warmth, and no questions. Most guests do not want to speak for a while, and nobody asks them to.

Rest of the day

Deliberately empty, and no travel

No transfer that day, no packing, no calls home. A session on your travel morning is refused for exactly this reason. Your integration lead checks in during the afternoon and again the following morning before you leave.

You cannot stop it

Unlike Kambo, there is no removing anything once you have inhaled. Fifteen seconds after the breath you are past any point of decision. That fact is the reason for two clearances rather than one.

Why one to one

Group Bufo sessions exist elsewhere and we will not run them. A person at the peak cannot be safely attended alongside anyone else, and the presence of others changes what a facilitator can do.

The days after

Some guests feel unusually settled, others feel scrambled for a week. Both are common. The first integration call is scheduled sooner for guests who took Bufo, and your lead knows to expect it.

Straight answers

What gets said about Bufo online, and what we will tell you

“One session replaces years of therapy.”
We make no medical claims and Bufo is not a treatment for anything. It is also the medicine least likely to hand you something usable, precisely because most people come back with no narrative at all.
“It is the strongest psychedelic, so it is the most valuable.”
Intensity is not depth. Guests who chase the strongest thing available are the ones our integration lead most often declines, and that is a judgement call rather than a medical one.
“It is safe because it is over so quickly.”
Duration is not safety. It causes a sharp rise in blood pressure and heart rate, deaths have been reported, and people can become physically unmanageable during the peak. Short and dangerous are perfectly compatible.
“Toad medicine is the traditional Amazonian way.”
It is not. Incilius alvarius lives in the Sonoran Desert and has no place in Shipibo practice or in this valley. Anyone framing it as ancient Amazonian lineage is inventing a heritage for it.
“You should do it right after ayahuasca while you are open.”
That is the reasoning behind most of the difficult outcomes we hear about. We wait until the ayahuasca work is finished, hold it in the morning, and decline it entirely for guests who are still processing.
“Everyone at the retreat will be doing it.”
Most weeks it is one or two guests out of twelve, and some weeks nobody. Nobody is told who did and who did not, and there is no group session and no shared moment around it.

Being cleared for ayahuasca or Kambo tells you nothing about Bufo. It is the medicine we decline most often, by a wide margin.

Screening

The narrowest gate we operate

Beyond the two clearances, this is the medical picture. Nothing here is assessed in advance from your application alone, because how you actually moved through the week matters as much as your file does.

Absolute stops

  • Any cardiac condition or arrhythmia
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Diagnosed schizophrenia or bipolar I
  • Epilepsy or seizure history
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Any current MAOI
  • A difficult or destabilising week in ceremony

Reviewed on the morning

  • Any serotonergic medication, including one tapered for the week
  • Blood pressure taken that morning, not on paper
  • Sleep across the previous seventy two hours
  • How the fourth ceremony went specifically
  • Whether you are travelling that day
  • What your integration lead heard from you all week

How we run it safely

  • Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT, precisely dosed
  • Lying down before administration, always
  • Two facilitators, one in physical contact throughout
  • Blood pressure before and after
  • Daylight, morning, never at night or in a group
  • Refused on the morning if anything is off
Serotonin syndrome

5-MeO-DMT combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or lithium carries a genuine risk of serotonin syndrome. If you tapered for the retreat, that taper is still relevant on the last morning, and the physician accounts for how long you have been off it.

Not medical advice

These lists are not exhaustive and nothing on this page is medical advice. Bufo is the medicine we most often decline, and being declined is a normal outcome rather than a failure of any kind.

Should you

Most weeks, one or two guests out of twelve

And some weeks nobody at all. If you are reading this page before your first retreat and already know you want it, that on its own is usually a reason we will suggest waiting. The guests who do best with Bufo tend to be the ones who were not particularly seeking it.

Nothing is lost by waiting. Returning guests are the majority of the people we clear, and a year of integration between the two is usually what makes the second one land.

Guests we tend to clear

  • Returning, with a settled first week behind them
  • Medically straightforward, off serotonergic medication for a long time
  • Had a steady rather than turbulent week
  • Have real support at home for the month after
  • Asked once, quietly, and accepted a maybe

Guests we ask to wait

  • First visit, in almost every case
  • Anyone whose fourth ceremony was difficult
  • Recently tapered off an SSRI or SNRI
  • Travelling home the same day
  • Anyone who raises it repeatedly during the week

Bufo is part of the $5,800 seven night retreat for guests both leads clear. It is not sold, not upgraded to, and not discounted if declined. A center that charges separately for its most intense medicine has a financial reason to find you eligible, and we would rather not have one.

Questions

About Bufo in Peru

How long does it last?

About fifteen seconds to full onset, a peak of roughly five minutes, and essentially finished within fifteen to twenty. The disorientation afterwards can last an hour or two, and some guests feel scrambled for several days.

Is your Bufo from a toad?

No. We use synthetically sourced 5-MeO-DMT, molecularly identical to the compound in the secretion and precisely dosable. Milking stresses the animal and demand is damaging wild populations in the Sonoran Desert, which is a long way from this valley in every sense.

Why do you decline so many people?

Because it integrates badly stacked on a first ayahuasca week. It is short, overwhelming, and usually leaves no narrative to work with, so guests still processing four ceremonies often cannot place it. Most weeks one or two of twelve guests are cleared, and some weeks nobody.

Is it dangerous?

It carries real risk. It causes a sharp rise in blood pressure and heart rate, deaths have been reported, and combining it with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or lithium risks serotonin syndrome. People can also become physically unmanageable at the peak, which is why you lie down first and one facilitator stays in contact throughout.

Can I stop it once it starts?

No. Fifteen seconds after the inhale you are past any point of decision, and there is nothing to remove. That is the single biggest difference from Kambo, and the reason two people have to agree beforehand.

What if I do not remember anything?

That is the usual outcome rather than a failure. Most guests have no recollection of the peak at all. Your integration lead works with what returns in the days and weeks after, which is often more than you expect on the morning.

Can I do it and fly home the same day?

No, and we refuse sessions on travel mornings for exactly that reason. The day after is deliberately empty, with no packing, no calls and no transfer.

Does it cost extra?

No. It is included in the $5,800 week for guests both leads clear, and being declined changes nothing about what you paid or what you receive.

One application covers all three medicines. Bufo is decided at the end of the week by two people who will have spent seven days with you, not by a form filled in months earlier. Nothing is charged either way, and a no costs you nothing at all.
